💸 I Bought a New Set Of Irons (January 2022)

After having played the same old MacGregor VIP blades, that I bought off the rack at some random golf store for less than €300 I figured it was time to change. Not only did I not play in the last 10 years, but I also didn't have enough time to practice. So, in order to bring some balance to my game, I needed something a bit easier to strike.

After going down that journey of looking at the latest tech, reading and watching a bunch of content on all the different new models that were out there, I moved on to the testing phase. I'd already hit a few shots with some TaylorMade p-770s and the 790s, but they didn't quite click. I also tried the P7MCs and liked those the most, but since I arrived at the end of a Demo day I couldn't do a full fitting. A few weeks later there was a Cobra demo day at my local driving I figured that would be a pretty good place to start.

Now, traditionally, I would have never gone with a brand like TaylorMade or Cobra for irons. You see, when I started out playing golf, both these brands were pretty lacking. TaylorMade was making decent drivers, sure, but their iron game was definitely not up to par with the likes of Mizuno, Titleist, and other major club manufacturers. But times have changed, and a lot of these brands have done some catching up in the last 15+ years.

When going through the fitting, we settled on the Cobra King Forged Tec model, a set of irons I had already read about and most of the reviews seemed great. Trying them out was no different, they felt pretty great in the hands and the balls were just flying off the face of these. I was hitting them solid and figured they would make a good option.

With the demo day being Cobra only, I sort of felt like trying a few other brands and weighing my options. So I went to a bigger shop and continued the testing. I kept the Cobras in the running but also tried Mizuno (my all-time dream iron brand), Ping, and TaylorMade again. This time there were clearly two winners, the Ping i59s and, once again, the Cobra King Forged Tec. The others options I struck quite alright (sorry Mizuno 😞), but the dispersion with the Ping and the Cobra irons was the best. Apart from that, they also felt the best and both options just filled me with confidence.

There wasn't too much splitting the Pings from the Cobras, the Pings were perhaps a hair better, but for as much as I wanted those, I just couldn't justify the price. Due to having been fitted on a demo day, I had an offer for the Cobra set from 4 iron to pitching wedge with a 20% discount bringing the total down from €999 to €800. Considering the Pings were going for a "mere" €1,799, the Cobras were an absolute steal in my mind. So I went ahead and put in my order.

In a time of shortages and shipping delays (due to a well-known virus, we all had to deal with), I was pretty surprised to already get my hands on the new irons in pretty much less than a month. A few weeks ago my new irons arrived, my previous irons were a bunch of old blades which at times felt they were working more against me than with me. So I figured, let's get some irons that are easier to hit and offer more forgiveness. After some testing, I came to the conclusion that the Cobra King Forged Tec irons were a good fit for me. There was also the Ping i59 which I absolutely loved, but I decided they weren’t worth double the price.

So here they are, my new Cobra King Forged Tec irons from 4 to PW with the stiff KBS $ taper lite shafts in them. I tried a few shafts but enjoyed these in the lighter version, it just felt better in the hands and in terms of the way I was hitting shots on the monitor there wasn’t much of a difference in distance and dispersion.

The first round I took them out I made the mistake of absolutely not knowing my distances and hit almost everything way too long. So I went back to the drawing board (also known as the driving range) and spent a good few hours understanding how long I was hitting these new irons.

Now I’m back at a local course for a round of 18 holes, and I'm excited to see what I can score.
